Haridwar
Home
to the original seekers of Nirvana, who come here to purify their soul,
Haridwar translated means the 'Gateway to the Gods'. This is a major
pilgrimage destination for Hindus, who visit its numerous temples and
ghats, seeking solace. Every evening, the Ganga aarti at Har-Ki-Pauri
attracts hundreds of devotees, who stand entranced at the sight of tiny
floral diyas flickering down the river and the radiance of the lamps
being swung in ritualistic motions by the priests.
For others, Haridwar is the gateway to adventurous revelations, leading
the way to white water rafting camps at Shivpuri and unimaginable treks
in the Himalayas.
You'll find the ghats and the temples nearby full of life all through
the day. The markets are flooded with halwaiis selling the delicious
combination of doodh and jalebi and an outrageously thick version of
rabri.
