Mudumalai
Mudumalai
means old hills. Mudumalai Sanctuary, rich in bio-diversity and dense
vegetation, is sandwiched between the Bandipur and Annamalai
sanctuaries, and together the three form the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve
in the Western Ghats, with the Mysore-Ooty highway passing through it.
It is situated at an elevation of 1000 metres and extends over an area
of 321 sq. kms where lie the sanctuary between Kerala and Karnataka
states. It was one of the first wildlife sanctuaries in the country and
is home to the spotted deer, tiger, wild boar & sloth bear. Otters
and crocodiles inhabit the Moyar River.

Best time to see wildlife is from November to February and when the
forests are lush green between July and October.

is Coimbatore, which is 180 km away. Bangalore airport is about 260 km
from Mudumalai
Road: Madumalai can be accessed from three states - Karnataka
via Mysore, which is only 91 km away; Tamil Nadu (where the sanctuary is
located) through Ooty, which is 64 km away and from Kerala through
Coimbatore (180 km). You can also board a bus from the Ooty bus stand.
Rail: The nearest rail junction is in Ooty, Mysore and
Coimbatore.
